Metallic Wedding Cakes

First it was naked cakes. Then the trend swung over to ombre cakes…ruffled cakes…and painted cakes. Now, it’s all about metallic—in cool silvers, golds, art-deco coppers, pinks and bronzes.
While plenty of brides are still going with the all-white cake or a sweet creation covered in fondant, these metallic wonders are popping up more and more.

So why the shift? “A lot of couples are using metallics in their décor,” says Anne Heap of Pink Cake Box in Denville. “They are so versatile. You can glam up a rustic wedding with a splash of gold, or use a beautiful silver to complement crystal and other sparkly details.”

Amy Serridge did just that at her wedding to Brent Walker at their farm WoodsEdge in Stockton last fall. Her six-tiered cake was created with silver glittered, matte and shiny layers. It was the perfect sparkly juxtaposition to her rustic setting in the 90-acre farm surrounded by llamas, alpacas and Tibetan yaks. “While we own and operate a farm, it was important to us to not have a rustic feel to our wedding,” says Amy. “I wanted a more unexpected, modern cake.”

Nicole Rotondo of Chatham also chose a metallic cake for her wedding to John Cataldo at the Hanover Manor in East Hanover, but for a completely different reason. “As it was a very difficult decision to make since I worked at Pink Cake Box, with all of the options available, we decided on the silver metallic because it wasn’t necessarily traditional and added a slight ‘edge.’ It was also versatile enough to sandwich our subtle KISS-themed tier into our semi-traditional cake!” she says (see above).

Nicole, who had an entire music-themed wedding with guitars on stands to hold their table seatings and signature drinks named after songs, originally wanted a black and white cake with the full KISS icons on a tier. “Then figured my parents would have a heart attack,” she laughs, “so I opted for the gray, silver and white cake.”

And for those of you who love metallic but aren’t ready to commit to it 100 percent, there’s a compromise: “Brides are asking for a ‘hint’ of gold, maybe on a banding detail or a monogram,” says Heap. “Some want a bolder look and we actually cover entire tiers with gold or silver leaf. Even though metallics are ‘glamorous’ they are also classy and elegant.”

And it doesn’t seem like any color is more on trend—Heap is getting requests for all of the metallics. “Gold, silver, copper and bronze are all popular,” she says. “We are also seeing a lot of ‘brushed’ gold or silver, which has a softer more romantic effect.”
