Raphaela and Matthew tied the knot on May 13, 2023 at the Venetian in Garfield. They originally met at her aunt’s store, where her husband had been a customer for more than 10 years.
“I got home one January winter day from running errands,” says Raphaela. “There were flowers and desserts set up at our apartment when I got home then he asked me to marry him.”
Of picking the Venetian for the couple’s big day, Raphaela says, “The food and service is excellent. Every wedding I was a guest at there exceeded my expectations.”
The couple had a classic black and white theme, with white roses and other florals, black bridesmaid dresses, and tuxedos for the groomsmen.
“My grandma, mom and aunt owned a bridal boutique in Jersey City when I was growing up,” says Raphaela. “I always knew I wanted an Eve of Milady gown one day. I wanted a traditional ballgown, but something that would also be sexy. So I chose a long sleeve dress with translucent sleeves.”
The gown features beading and lace detailing, plus a layer of sequins that shimmered beautifully in the light. “The dress included a pattern of detail in every inch of the entire gown, as Eve of Milady’s gowns usually are,” says the bride. She adds, “It was flattering on my curvy figure and absolutely the perfect dress made for me.”
The couple’s favorite moment was walking down the aisle at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
“All my grandparents’ pictures in my bridal bouquet rosary,” Raphaela says.
“I know the stress of planning and finances can sometimes get in the way, as well as family/friend drama and dynamics, but don’t let this ruin your special day. Always remember the reason why you are doing it all: marrying your best friend,” says Raphaela. “Be choosy of who you allow in your bridal party. You want girls and guys who will support you and have your back through anything.”
The couple traveled to Saint Lucia and “absolutely loved it” there.
