“Kevin and I pretty much became inseparable,” Sarah says. “We became study buddies, as well as hiking/skiing partners whenever we needed an escape from medicine.” Both were in their first year at Albany Medical College. During their fourth year of school, they were choosing between programs in California and Philadelphia to complete their residencies. “We were in the midst of flying back and forth between coasts, when Kevin proposed in front of the house where I had grown up, in Holmdel.”
Ultimately, the couple moved to California—Kevin is from Atwater, California—where Sarah is a pediatric resident and Kevin an internal-medicine resident, but returned to New Jersey for their wedding. They were married on May 14, 2013, at the Ashford Estate in Monmouth County. “We loved the rustic feel of the farm and the barn combined with the elegance of the estate,” Sarah says.
Sarah, 28, wore a tulle A-line gown by Amsale; Kevin, 27, wore a Banana Republic suit. Sarah’s bouquet was an astonishing mix of peonies, garden roses, succulents, champagne roses, lily of the valley, sweet pea and lavender. But perhaps the most special part of her bouquet was the prayer book that was wired to it.
“That prayer book was my great grandfather’s and was also carried down the aisle by my grandmother, my mother and my aunt.” Other personal touches included Sarah’s grandmother’s teacups as part of the centerpiece; the ceremony musicians, Steve & Steve, are very close friends of Sarah’s parents; and Sarah’s older brother, Noah, officiated the ceremony.
The wedding was catered by Main Street Fine Catering, chosen for its unique menu: Food stations included “The Taste of the Shore,” featuring lobster rolls and avocado gazpacho shots. The couple’s request for a “fun” passed intermezzo resulted in peach prosecco push-up pops. “We didn’t want our guests to stop dancing,” says Sarah, “so we had milkshake shots and mini root-beer floats passed around.” After a honeymoon in Ambergris Caye, Belize, the couple is at home in Orange County, California.
