Despite asking Mr. and Mrs. Manz for Katie’s hand in May of 2016, Chris did not propose to Katie until January 2, 2017. Before you say, “what took so long?!” Let us say patience proved to make for a perfect day!Originally, Chris hoped to propose on New Year’s Day 2017, but uncooperative weather forced the proposal to be delayed one day. The next day, the weather cleared, leaving a beautiful sunny day in West Texas. Chris, Katie, and Audrey (Chris’s sister) embarked on what Katie thought would be just a day hike in the Franklin Mountains State Park in El Paso, TX. The North Franklin Mountain peak was the goal, but some poor navigation led to a detour that tired out the hiking party before they could reach the summit. However, a beautiful vista presented itself a worthy candidate of the proposal scene.
As they approached the lookout point, a family approached from the opposite direction, and reached the destination before us. Audrey and Chris discretely delayed progress on the trail until the other family moved on. The moment finally arrived! Chris asked his sister to take a picture of the love birds with the beautiful desert landscape and mountains as the back drop. Chris gave Audrey the nod she was expecting as the signal to start filming. On one knee and with a trembling voice, Chris proposed and Katie, and with an excited giggle, she said, “Of course!”
Katie got her dress while she was still living in Tennessee. Her parents were visiting her a month or two after they had gotten engaged. Her mom asked if they could try on dresses, Katie thought it was too early but agreed to it. They went to two stores and wanted to go to a third, but you had to have an appointment and they hadn’t planned that far ahead. As they were leaving the second store, she called the third store to see if they could squeeze them in – they had a cancellation! She tried on two dresses and told the stylist what she did and did not like about them, and then she said “hold on, I think I have one you’ll like better.” When Katie tried that one on and came out of the dressing room, her dad started to cry and then her mom started. It felt like everyone around us was staring at Katie’s dress, she felt really beautiful and then knew it was the one! She got the dress at White Lace and Promises in Knoxville, TN.
During the last dance of the reception, Chris and Katie were dancing and all of their friends and family surrounded them and sang the song that was playing. They think it was “I don’t want to miss a thing” by Aerosmith. It was a really happy moment and they felt so loved.
One detail you couldn’t live without? The parents and bridal party! They made everything go so smoothly.
First dance song? “Take the World”-Johnnyswim
