If you’re dreaming of designing your own wedding gown and wouldn’t mind a bit of a head start, you just might fall in love with bridal separates. This trend is popular because brides like the option of choosing a top or corset and then adding a skirt that can be worn after the wedding as a set or individually.

One of the leading designers in the separates movement, Martina Liana, offers a completely integrated collection that can be mixed and matched to create multiple glamorous looks for any style.
“We like Martina’s high-end separates because of the possibilities—four beaded tops, three lace tops and three illusion tops, plus six skirts in long and short lengths. They all mix and match beautifully,” says Leia Marley, co-owner of I Do …I Do bridal salon in Morristown. “Just choose your favorite top, and then match it to any skirt in the collection.”

“Now it’s easy to be an earth-child bride in simple lace or a Jersey glamour girl trimmed in bling. Separates give you so many options for both the ceremony and reception,” Marley adds. “Some brides wear one gorgeous top with a long skirt for the ceremony, then keep the top but quick-change into a short skirt for dancing at the reception.”

With Martina Liana, you can even have a top and a skirt sewn together as a customized one-piece wedding dress. “This is a fun way to design your own gown,” says Marley. “You could create a destination wedding ensemble with a crop top and simple skirt, or a traditional ball gown with beaded top and ruffled skirt.” Each Martina Liana separate is available in blush, cream or both hues. Marley adds that Pronovias and Justin Alexander also offer separates.

As for price, separates are generally no more expensive than a traditional dress, and you get a lot of bang for your buck since you can wear each piece during your honeymoon or even on your first-anniversary trip.

You can also find separates from designers such as Stephanie Allin, and online at Bhldn and J. Crew. We expect this trend to stick around for a while, so be on the lookout for more of these gorgeous, versatile looks.
